Round up…
It’s been almost two and a half months on the road for the Songo.info boys with plenty of highs and a few lower moments. After a very successful Cape Epic marred by a controversial time penalty it was off to Pietermaritzburg for the first round of the UCI World Cup series where the home town favourite Burry Stander got an impressive third followed by Susi in fourth.
After the great result in South Africa it was off to the Sea Otter Classic festival in the USA where Christoph pulled off an impressive win in the cross country race. Unfortunately Burry took the wiser decision to pull out midway after suffering from a bit of a cold and rest up for the next World Cup.
The travels did not stop here and were straight on to a plane back to Europe for the next two World Cup rounds, expectations were high and the racing was hard with Burry and Christoph being the only two who could follow the pace set by Julien Absalon in Offenburg.
Unfortunately Susi had a nasty crash and had to withdraw from what was looking to be a certain podium finish. Burry went on to finish a brilliant fourth position overall and take a commanding lead in the U/23 competition.
The racing did not stop here and a week later it was World Cup #3 in the cycling crazy region of Houffalize, Belgium. This is traditionally Susi’s favourite course of the year and was the place that Burry began his breakthrough season in 2008. Unfortunately the boys had been a bit ill the week leading up to race day but were determined to make the best of their situations.
After both had poor starts there was a strong showing of character for both as they fought their way back up the field with Burry getting another incredible fourth position overall and Susi fighting for a good 11th considering the week that had passed.
With 3 weeks to go till the next round the guys are enjoying a training block from the comfort of their own homes and preparing to continue the script to what has been a successful 2009 so far…
