Group rides with the Songo boys…or was that a race?
Over the last week and a half we have managed to get in 2 great rides with the majority of the kids coming along to experience some of the awesome riding on Stellenbosch mountain. What has amazed me the most is the progress all of them are showing with a few in particular promising great potential!
Bobby Behan who is the Global Sports Marketing manager for Specialized and someone who has put in much behind the scenes effort for the Songo project joined us for the ride and had plenty of knowledge and tips to pass on.
The mistake I did make was set up 2 king of the mountain hot spot sprints and think that I could compete along with them…needless to say this was where the ride turned into an all out racing affair!
Today we were back on the trails with some of the older boys from the BMX track joining and as Songo put it: “the are looking for a promotion to the mountain bike team”. They struggled a little on the climbs but were far more adept on some of the technical riding, a sure sign that the BMX track is teaching them many of the basics regarding bike control.
Songo has an amazing ability to be such a motivation while also pushing the kids bit by bit to the next level in each of their own capacities. He is never one to back down on a race up the next hill and shows that there is still plenty of power from his “Cape Epic legs” as he called them.

With a few more weeks of school holidays left the boys should be a regular sight in and around Stellenbosch and we hope you join for a ride sometime soon!
